What it is
NDIS worker screening is the nationally consistent check that determines whether a person poses an unacceptable risk to people with disability. It is governed by the NDIS (Worker Screening) Rules together with the worker screening laws of each state and territory, and is delivered through state and territory Worker Screening Units.
Registered NDIS providers must ensure that anyone in a “risk assessed role” holds a valid NDIS Worker Screening Check clearance. A risk assessed role is generally one that involves more than incidental contact with participants, or a role specified as risk assessed by the provider’s governance arrangements.
A clearance is portable across employers and states and is subject to ongoing monitoring — if new information arises during the clearance period, the outcome can change. Providers must therefore treat screening as a continuing obligation, not a one-off check at hiring.
Providers are required to keep a register of workers in risk assessed roles, record clearance status and expiry, and ensure that workers without a valid clearance do not perform risk assessed work. State variations also apply, so multi-state providers must track requirements jurisdiction by jurisdiction.
Key requirements

- Maintain a worker screening register with clearance numbers, status and expiry dates
- Monitor clearances on an ongoing basis and act on any change of status
- Apply the correct state or territory requirements for each location you operate in
- Keep evidence that unscreened workers are not performing risk assessed work
