NDIS Practice Standards

The quality benchmark every registered NDIS provider is measured against.

What it is

The NDIS Practice Standards are the quality and safety benchmark set by the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission. They define the outcomes a registered provider must achieve to deliver safe, high-quality supports to people with disability, and they are the framework your organisation is audited against at registration and re-registration.

The Standards are organised into a set of Core modules — rights and responsibilities, provider governance and operational management, the provision of supports, and the support-provision environment — plus supplementary modules that apply to higher-risk and specialist supports such as high-intensity daily personal activities, specialist behaviour support, early childhood supports and implementing restrictive practices.

Which modules apply to you depends on the registration groups you deliver. Each Standard is paired with detailed quality indicators that an approved quality auditor uses as evidence of conformity, so the Standards effectively double as the audit checklist for your business.

Providers delivering complex or higher-risk supports complete a certification audit (an initial stage 1 desktop review followed by a stage 2 on-site audit), while lower-risk providers complete a verification audit. In both cases you must demonstrate, with documented evidence, that your systems meet every applicable indicator.

Key requirements

  • Operate a quality management system that addresses every applicable Core and supplementary module
  • Deliver person-centred supports that uphold each participant’s rights, privacy, dignity and choice
  • Maintain governance, risk management, complaints and incident management systems with clear accountabilities
  • Screen, train, supervise and support workers appropriately for the supports they deliver
  • Keep accurate, current records and evidence mapped to the relevant quality indicators
  • Engage an approved quality auditor for a verification or certification audit and act on findings
  • Run a continuous improvement process that captures and closes out non-conformances
