What it is
The Australian National Aged Care Classification (AN-ACC) is the funding model for residential aged care. It replaced the Aged Care Funding Instrument (ACFI) and ties subsidy to the assessed care needs of residents rather than to provider-completed appraisals.
Under AN-ACC, an independent assessor evaluates each resident and assigns them to one of a set of AN-ACC classes that reflect the relative cost of their care. Funding has a fixed component (a base care tariff that recognises shared, facility-level costs) and a variable component driven by each resident’s class.
AN-ACC is closely linked to mandatory care minute responsibilities. Providers are expected to deliver a target number of total care minutes and registered nurse minutes per resident per day, and to report their actual care minutes, with funding and accountability connected to delivery.
For providers, AN-ACC means supporting accurate independent assessments, understanding how classifications translate into funding, and maintaining the staffing, rostering and record-keeping needed to meet care minute targets and withstand regulatory scrutiny.
